| Love leads UCLA in romp over Youngstown St.
Kevin Love scored 21 points and pulled down nine rebounds as second-ranked UCLA trounced Youngstown State, 83-52, in the opening round of the CBE Classic at Pauley Pavillion.
Lorenzo Mata-Real added 14 points and a game-high 14 boards for the Bruins (2-0), who won their 22nd straight game at home. Nikola Dragovic finished with 12 points and Josh Shipp chipped in with 11.
UCLA Bruins will now move on to face Cal State San Bernardino on Tuesday. The Coyotes upended Weber State 71-59 earlier Monday.
John Barber had 12 points but turned it over five times for the Penguins (0-1), who will now face Weber State in a consolation contest Tuesday. Byron Davis tallied 11 points with seven turnovers while Vance Cooksey and Jack Liles each had 10 points.
The Bruins broke open a close game with a 15-4 run in the first half. Mustafa Abdul-Hamid capped the run with a layup to give UCLA a 23-11 edge with 10:18 left in the opening frame.
The Bruins kept pulling away from there. Shipp connected on a layup to make it 35-20 with 3:04 remaining and UCLA hung on to that 15-point lead heading to the locker room, 44-29, thanks to a three from Dragovic with 22 ticks left in the half.
Russell Westbrook opened the final frame with a triple and UCLA never looked back. Alfred Aboya's layup, with 17:56 left in the game, gave the Bruins their first 20-point cushion, 51-31.
Another easy lay-in, by Mata-Real with 14:28 remaining, made it a 30-point game, 63-33, and UCLA coasted to the finish line from there.
Game Notes
Youngstown State is coming off a 14-17 showing in 2006-07, with the 14 wins being the most for the Penguins since 2000-01...This was the first-ever meeting between YSU and UCLA on the hardwood...Youngstown state has only beaten one ranked Division I team in school history...The Penguins had 23 turnovers in the game.
